COVID-19 Update

COVID-19 UpdateAs the situation surrounding COVID-19 (Coronavirus) continues to develop, Watermark Medical’s focus on the health and safety of our staff, partners, customers and patients is our top priority. We are closely monitoring guidance from the CDC and other public health organizations and taking appropriate action to ensure we continue to provide uninterrupted technical support, as well as maintain clinical and diagnostic services for our home sleep testing clients. While most of our technical and clinical staff are working remotely, we currently maintain shipping/receiving and quality assurance services from our office to manage device maintenance and repair requirements.

A few questions regarding the coronavirus outbreak have been specifically asked about the cleaning processes of the ARES device. Our cleaning procedure (when followed as described in the ARES Product Guide) has been validated and meets agency guidelines to mitigate the transfer risk of bacteria and viruses. For our customers safety, the ARES User Guide intended to be given or reviewed with each patient, includes instructions for the patient to place the device back in the plastic bag to return to the issuing facility. Once cleaned, storing the ARES device in a new resealable plastic bag will help ensure that the ARES remains clean and ready for the next patient use. Those who clean the devices after patient use can limit their chance of exposure by proper use of gloves and frequent washing of their hands. We are monitoring guidelines from CDC and other regulatory agencies and will adjust our procedure if their recommendations change.

Pulmonology and Cardiology

ARES™ for Pulmonologists and Cardiologists

Our revolutionary ARES™ Home Test is a convenient alternative to traditional in-lab sleep testing. This system is accessible, easy to use, and accurate, making it ideal for cardiovascular and respiratory patients at risk for Obstructive Sleep Apnea.

Why Is Treating Obstructive Sleep Apnea Important?

Sleep plays a crucial role in the healing process of the heart and blood vessels. This is most apparent when we consider the connection between sleep deficiencies and the increased risk of developing heart disease, respiratory, and dangerous metabolic disorders in the millions of patients with sleep apnea.

Obstructive sleep apnea is present in:

38% of patients with Hypertension

48% of patients with Atrial Fibrillation

54% of patients with Obesity

55% of patients with Heart Failure

58% of patients with Diabetes

78% of patients with both Diabetes and Obesity

Understanding the connection between OSA and its comorbidities makes it clear – healthier sleep means healthier patients.

Sleep Apnea, Heart Disease, and Respiratory Health

Heart Health

The connection between sleep apnea and cardiovascular health is undeniable. When a patient stops breathing in the middle of their sleep cycle, the body responds by releasing stress hormones. The more breathing interruptions, the more adrenaline is released into the system, keeping heart rates high and increasing blood pressure. Over a lifetime, this pattern can cause significant harm to the heart and the patient’s overall health.

Respiratory Health

The strains caused by sleep apnea don’t stop at the heart. OSA is fundamentally both a sleep and a breathing disorder. In fact, about 20% of sleep apnea sufferers will develop chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and pulmonary hypertension.
